Description

Living in the natural scenery created in the city

I have been exploring the method of correcting the site with the RC frame building, creating artificial nature, and living directly in there. The building frame was made rough as part of the land but the interior was finely finished, which made a good contrast. By dealing with the conceptual expression and living function separately, I tried to achieve architectural expression while guaranteeing comfort.

Three sides of the site are adjacent to neighboring houses, so I made a U-shape plan facing north with an opening to the road, and the approach to the existing site one layer higher than the ground was made an inside space, which created large space to spare. The root of the U-shape is a staircase, and the east and west buildings are gradually raised by half layer in a pendulum manner, and the entire building is then gently connected. The whole volume with an image of a rock mountain is set back for each layer. I reproduced the scenery in which rock was eroded, soil accumulated in the dents, and plants grow there.

I made the entire plan three-dimensionally on a PC, but after sorting out the program and fixing the entire construction with rough volume, I repeated the work of manually exploring the space as if I was connecting scenes and of harmonizing the entire space and function. As a result, a sequence was created, and the rock mountain (valley?) and passages (path produced by the steps of people) were produced.

The paths all around the building produce a variety of scenes. There are almost no corridors on the skipped floors, and the void made by linking pieces of space extends to both sides of the stairs that face each other with the courtyard between them just like a peninsula. The courtyard is gradually raised while synchronizing with the inside steps like accumulated soil at the foot of an eroded rock mountain and is connected to the rooms through a large opening in the living room with the dining room at the top. The windows of the rooms are arranged to face the direction of the staircase and take light from the south. Also, all exterior walls adjacent to the neighboring ground are load-bearing walls, and the opening is only slits. However, scattering light from the three-layered glass block on the south side shines on the staircase and into the surrounding rooms all day. The courtyard facing north contributes to controlling the summer sunlight in Tokyo. In the inside of the outer heat insulated, RC frame is exposed with a minimum coating, and there are no partition walls or ceilings. There is a floor in the rooms, and furniture and the floor with an integrated design that includes the equipment act as all living functions. There are more than 70 steps (150 mm high) other than stairs (180 mm high), but adults can directly move by elevator to the garage, dining kitchen, bedroom, and rooftop. Thus, any inconvenience is resolved.

I acquired the image of the whole shaping while visiting architecture by Zumthor in Switzerland, but I adopted the motif from a columnar joint in Izu, which I was familiar when I was a child. Although I do not think it is a general solution, I was dedicated to creating the space for the owner who trusted me as an architect.
