Namgang Building(Silver Boat) near Hongik University, a mixed-use commercial building, was designed by us about two decades ago and the whole first floor was designed as a piloti parking lot, due to the construction investment plan giving priority to a family restaurant-which requires a large parking lot on the first floor.
In order to maintain the ever-increasing commercial value of the Hongdae area, it was necessary to construct a mechanical parking station which will transform the piloti park lot into a store and the client planned a mixed-use building comprised of a tall car park building.
The existing Namgang Building was designed as a mixed-use building with three curved walls of frozen movement used for a space of dynamic movement by the concept of a Silver Boat based on the ‘placeness’ of Mapo. This building is also designed as a metal mass comprised of dynamic curved surface in order to assimilate with Namgang Building and to metaphorically include the speed of cars.
Part of the external wall is designed as a transparent polycarbonate window in order to reveal vertical circulation of cars, it looks like a kinetic art of city.
