Description

A mix of types in two blocks

Client: Barrat East London, Taylor Wimpey UK, London Development Agency
Programme: 349 apartments and 11 town houses, 350m2 commercial space and crèche

Block 2 consists of an ‘L’ shaped apartment building containing 156 dwellings, a row of 11 townhouses and an inner landscaped courtyard deck above covered parking spaces. In addition there is a ground floor residents gym and retail/commercial space. The residential mix provides private, intermediate and social tenured dwellings.

Barrier Park Phase 5 is located between the main road to London City Airport and the DLR viaduct in the North and Thames Barrier Park to the south with great views to the Thames River. Massing and facade concepts respond to the changing context around the block striking a careful balance between integration with its neighbours and the creation of an recognizable own address. The street facades are of the same dark red brick as the neighouring blocks. The park frontage is unified as white brickwork. These contrasting facade colours are held together by feature brickwork in white glazed brick bands that integrate the windows and balconies. At ground level the two key corners are activated by commercial units. The block has a green roof to increase the biodiversity of the area.
