The client owns a number of art objects and wants to start a new life with his family in a house like an art gallery by making the most of his collection. I designed the RC one-story house so that the house would not be intimidating nor add noise to the quiet surroundings. Like the exterior, I chose monotonous colors for the interior as a background for the art objects. I carefully selected minimal materials to create a stoic impression.

The courtyard plan of the house is very simple. A family room is located in the center, the main bedroom and the kid’s room and hobby room are located in both wings with the courtyard in the middle. I created Western formality with symmetry and at the same time expressed asymmetrical Japanese flexibility by placing steps and a private court on one side.

The family room facing the courtyard has a high ceiling, and the eaves of 1,800 mm that obstruct the natural light coming from the high windows in the north and south give a light floating atmosphere to the building by making the edges thin. The coffered ceiling divided into 1200 mm square looks like the ceiling of a samurai residence. In addition to the original role of the structure that supports the load from the roof, it plays an effective role of sublimating the building to the minimal art.

The art objects, furniture, and lighting are designed by artists and designers selected by the owner and are integrated into the building to express the characteristics with less noise. This is not a house-shaped art gallery but a house like an art gallery.
