Description

Background
Basement, full remodelling and extension project in Hampstead, one of London’s most sought after areas, creating a no-compromise, contemporary family home of approximately 850 m2.

The Brief
The design intent was to reinstate the original form of the existing house, clearly defining old and new. Demolishing the two storey extension and replacing it with a single storey ground floor extension, with basement beneath, greatly reduced the bulk and form of the property to the rear.

Outcomes
By removing the extension, together with a bay window from the main reception room (both non-original), the rear elevation of the property is reinstated close to how it would originally have appeared. The house has been cleverly designed and considerate of its Conservation Area surroundings.

The basement construction and additions are distinctly contemporary in appearance yet remain subservient to the existing property.
