Description

Center for a Unesco World Heritage Site

According to UNESCO and the UN, the intentions of World Heritage are to encourage people to become more engaged in global issues and to safeguard peace, as well as to protect natural and cultural treasures.

Today, Gunnar Asplund’s service building Tallum acts as the center for the Woodland Cemetery, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The aspirations in the renewal of this information center were to bring forth Asplund’s intentions, to reestablish the original entrance and to accentuate and let more light into the space. The intention was to preserve and enhance the quality of the spaces and to introduce a contemporary function that aids the understanding of the Woodland Cemetery, a unique place with world-renowned architecture and nature.

The proposal was developed in collaboration with the Stockholm City Cemeteries Administration, in consultation with the Stockholm City Museum and the County Board.
