Description

The project is a joint venture. Partners are owners and managers of relevant parts of the infrastructures in an area of immense potential: a transportation hub (“Termini” and “Tiburtina” railway stations, Tiburtina national bus hub and underground) and a culture hub (“Sapienza” University, Policlinico “Umberto I” hospital, National Library and Museums). The area also show signs of decay. Spaces once used by the railway system are being abandoned.

Here’s the challenge: “Sapienza” is acquiring vast portions of these no mans lands turning them in culture hubs. Such is the case for the new seat of The Department of Oriental studies.

The surrounding is a very complex urban void, defined by a dense vehicular network composed by two horizontal layers: the flyover above and a mixture of regular city fabric and high-speed road on the ground, with the dangerous addition of a large number of students crossing.
The aim of this project is to:

1. Rationalize the vehicular network system,
avoiding congestion generated by too many intersections and widening the green areas.

2. Recover and re-design underpass
and unused area beneath the flyover in order to give a new space back to the city.

3. Offer new options of mobility
inside the Municipality, promoting virtuous behaviour of the students favouring the pedestrian and bike means of transportation through the development of an app enhancing transportation options and giving rewards to students and citizens.
