Description

Community in the landscape

Client: 3W Vastgoed
Programme: 74 apartments, 92 build parking spaces

The site was previously occupied by a number of warehouses and grain silos, a legacy of a former industrial period when industry lined the banks of the Nederweert canal and goods were shipped eastwards via the canal to the port of Antwerpen and south to the industrial city of Liege. The industry was abandoned long ago, with the canal given over to holiday boating. But the historical buildings remained until recently, a powerful reminder on the skyline of the town of the past.

An urban plan was prepared by AWG / Bob van Reeth that recognises the character of the industrial site, but also tries to reconcile the difference in scale between the former canal-side architecture and the small-scale buildings of the town centre and residential areas. The size of the urban block, building heights, treatments of facades and the materiality of the buildings have been intentionally defined with contradictory references in mind. These contradictions have been brought into sharp contrast in a carefully controlled and sharply detailed facade composition.
