Description
The “Sun Village House” is a small house perched on a steep cliff, set in the upper neighbourhood of a village that was built to face due south.
It used to be a family home. The basic living quarters were upstairs and comprised a very basic kitchen and living space. Downstairs was an animal pen.
The space upstairs is light, with big French doors that were refashioned in the early 20th century. In opposition, the downstairs is a darker cooler space with a camara (stone vault) and small openings.
Whilst breaking into the “sterna”, the cistern built to the side of the house, we revealed an ideal shower space. It has the feel of a Turkish bath with light pouring through the well hole.
The layout and interiors were all treated to reflect the original house as much as possible. We finished the floor with reclaimed timber. We used a waxed concrete finish on the built kitchen. This, together with the plaster on the walls that follows the stonework and the inside of the roof with its original timber, makes the spaces feel handcrafted.
We recycled the original French windows with their handmade fittings into wardrobe doors with mirrors replacing the glazing.
